Macular Degeneration: What You Need to Know

Macular degeneration, also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is a common eye condition that affects the central part of your vision. It occurs when the macula - the small, sensitive area in the center of the retina - begins to break down or deteriorate. The macula is responsible for sharp, detailed vision, so when it's damaged, tasks like reading, recognizing faces, or driving can become more difficult.

Optometrists play a key role in the early detection and ongoing management of macular degeneration. At Varley Optometry, we use specialized imaging technology to examine the retina and track any changes in the macula over time. If signs of AMD are found, we’ll guide you on next steps - this may include lifestyle changes, nutritional supplements, vision aids, or a referral to a retinal specialist for advanced treatment.

Early diagnosis and regular monitoring are essential to slowing the progression of AMD and preserving your central vision.

If you're over 50 or have a family history of macular degeneration, book an eye exam to stay ahead of vision changes.
